Research Project
Choose an artwork which you are particularly interested in
and prepare a 500 word research report about it.
Your report should be divided into three parts (150-200 words each
part):
Part 1: An overview of the artist, the work itself and the art
movement.
Part 2: The social context the work was made in. That is, what was
happening in history and politics at the time? How did this influence or impact
the work?
Part 3: Analysis: what makes the work
important/significant/valuable
and your opinion of it?
Your teacher will notify you of draft
and final due dates.
bibliography in your report.

Principles of Design
I am appreciating reading your creative responses in your portfolios. However, some students would still benefit from extra practice. If you would like extra practice on the principles of design, you may use Hokusai's Great Wave Off Kanagawa or prepare one of your own to lead the class through the principles. Be sure to make copies for everyone.

Second Workshop
The second art workshop, worth 5%, is scheduled for Saturday, November 10th, 10am-12 in the ADMC auditorium. This one is about photography. You don't need a camera, but bring your mobile phones. Unfortunately, this date overlaps with the Art Fair at Saadiyat, so plan ahead to be able to do both!

Portfolios
I look forward to reading your portfolios when we return from the holiday.
You do not need to wait for me to return it for you to pick your six images and begin your reflections. I suggest you pick images that will help you demonstrate your knowledge of the principles of design. I hope you will include your favorite artwork and explain why it is your favorite. My favorite is Van Gogh's Thatched Cottages at Cordeville.
Eid Mubarak!

Critical Reflections Writing Portfolio
This will be the largest part of your grade: 40% overall. Please follow the model to make general remarks about the image overall as well as detailed analysis demonstrating your knowledge of art & design principles.
I appreciate this painting because of the contrasting elements which create both drama and restfulness.
This painting utilizes both horizontal and vertical lines which give it both peaceful and inspirational qualities while carrying the viewer's eyes across it. The geometric shapes flow into the organic shapes suggesting man in harmony with nature. The forms of the boats are central. They are moored and at rest.
The full value range and use of contrasting, near complimentary, colors are used exclusively for dramatic effect. The stars shine in the sky and the city lights on the water showing man's creation reflecting God's creation. Van Gogh implies texture with his brush strokes creating ripples on the water.
The painting shows deep space with the people and boats in the foreground, the water and city in the middle ground and the starry sky in the background. The people seem small and dark while the stars radiate, almost throbbing in their halos of light. Perhaps this suggests the greatness of nature and our place in it.
I find this painting overall inspirational and beautiful.
